Why Big Cities Are Back: What LinkedIn’s Cities on the Rise List Says About Career Opportunities in 2026
LinkedIn’s latest Cities on the Rise rankings provide an interesting look at where career opportunities and talent are concentrating across the country. They rank the best locations for small, medium, and big cities, offering insight into where industries are growing and where professionals may find new opportunities.
The Top 10 Big Cities on LinkedIn’s list for this year are:
San Francisco, CA
Minneapolis, MN
New York City, NY
Seattle, WA
Chicago, IL
Dallas, TX
Orlando, FL
Miami, FL
Atlanta, GA
Denver, CO
Seeing several of these cities at the top of the list made sense given the broader shifts I’ve been watching in the labor market. With the big return to office wave I’ve been watching over the last few years, it makes sense that some of the largest cities are seeing renewed momentum.
For several years, remote work expanded the possibilities for where people could live and work. Geography became less of a factor in many career decisions. That flexibility created new possibilities, but we’re seeing another shift: geography is becoming an important part of career strategy again.
San Francisco and Silicon Valley Continue to Drive Innovation
San Francisco’s position at the top of this list aligns with what I’ve continued to see in the region. I have a strong client base throughout California, especially in the San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley, and I’ve continued to see the energy and opportunity there.
That momentum is especially clear in technology, AI, and emerging industries, and this was palpable when I was there during Tech Week last year. San Francisco continues to be a place where new ideas, companies, and career opportunities develop.
New York City Continues to Expand Career Possibilities
New York City remains a powerhouse for career opportunity. After all, New York is where my own career started in my 20s.
What’s especially exciting is New York’s continued growth as a technology hub. According to the Global Startup Ecosystem Report, New York City ranks as the #2 startup ecosystem in the world, behind Silicon Valley. The growth of technology alongside established industries like finance and media continues to create new opportunities for professionals navigating the future of work.
Denver’s Diverse Economy Creates Opportunity
I’m proud to see Denver make the list! As a Colorado local, I’ve seen the continued evolution of our job market and the many industries that make this region a strong place for professionals to build their careers.
Technology and AI are creating new opportunities, while established industries like financial services, aerospace, and energy continue to play an important role in Colorado’s economy. Denver remains a very competitive job market for job seekers, and that hasn’t changed over the last decade. What continues to stand out is the strength of our diverse economy, with emerging industries growing alongside established sectors that have long supported Colorado’s workforce.
What This Means for Career Strategy
The biggest takeaway I see from rankings like this is simple: big cities are back, and geography matters meaningfully again.
For professionals considering their next move, career decisions require looking beyond the role itself. While fully remote opportunities still exist, professionals are increasingly weighing that flexibility against the broader economic opportunity of a region. Where companies are investing, where industries are growing, and where talent is concentrating can influence access to opportunities, professional networks, and long-term career growth.
Geography isn't the only factor in making a career decision, but it’s an important factor worth considering again.
